Day Trips from Indio — Joshua Tree, the Salton Sea, Anza-Borrego, and the Mecca Hills

By Danny Tour · Updated 2026 · All posts

Indio sits where three deserts meet, which makes it an unusually good base for day trips. These four are the ones we recommend to guests most often, ordered by drive time from Indian Palms Country Club.

Ladder Canyon & Painted Canyon — Mecca Hills (~30 min)

The closest and, for many guests, the favorite. A slot-canyon loop hike — roughly 4 to 5 miles — that climbs through narrow passages using fixed ladders, tops out on a ridge with views to the Salton Sea, and descends through the wide, striped walls of Painted Canyon. Go October through April; it's dangerously hot in summer. The last few miles of the access road are graded dirt and sand — a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Bring more water than you think you need and start early.

Salton Sea (~35–45 min)

California's largest lake is one of the strangest places in the state: a receding inland sea, a shoreline of abandoned resorts, and some of the most extraordinary birdwatching in the West. Stop at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area visitor center on the north shore, then drive the east side to Bombay Beach, a half-abandoned town turned open-air art installation. Continue to Niland for Salvation Mountain, the folk-art hill of painted adobe and straw, and Slab City beyond it. It's a very different day from Joshua Tree — plan on the round trip taking an afternoon and bring your own food.

Joshua Tree National Park (~45 min to the nearest entrance)

From Indio, the quickest way in is the Cottonwood entrance off I-10 heading east — about 35 to 40 minutes to the visitor center. From there the park road climbs north through the Colorado Desert into the Mojave, where the Joshua trees start. If you have a full day, drive through to the north entrances (Twentynine Palms or Joshua Tree town) and come home via Highway 62 and I-10 — a loop of roughly 3.5 hours of driving plus stops.

Don't miss: Cholla Cactus Garden (right off the main road, stunning at sunset), Keys View for the panorama over the Coachella Valley, Hidden Valley for an easy loop through the boulders, and Arch Rock. Buy your pass online before you go; cell service is minimal inside. Spring (March–April) is peak — arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends or expect entrance queues.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (~1 hr 15 min to Borrego Springs)

California's largest state park, southwest of the Salton Sea. The draw is wildflower season — late February through March in a good rain year, when the desert floor turns purple and yellow — and the Galleta Meadows sculptures, more than 130 giant metal animals scattered across the desert around Borrego Springs. Add the short Borrego Palm Canyon hike to a palm oasis, and the drive over Montezuma Grade for the view. A long day, but a memorable one.

Honorable mentions

  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (~45 min) — from desert floor to 8,500 feet in ten minutes; often snow on top in winter.
  • Coachella Valley Preserve (~25 min) — palm oases along the San Andreas fault with easy trails, free.
  • Idyllwild (~1 hr 30 min) — a mountain town at 5,400 feet with pines, cafés, and a completely different climate.

Practical notes

Every trip above is best October through April. Fill the tank in Indio; services are sparse east and south. Carry a gallon of water per person, download offline maps, and plan to be back for a sunset swim — the pool is the reward for the drive.

Base camp with a pool

Palms Place in Indio sleeps 12 with a private heated pool and spa, a Tesla charger for the road trips, and a fully stocked kitchen for the early starts.
